Abstract
Three even-aged stands of Abies balsamea have been precommercially thinned and later commercially thinned on half of their area. Thirteen years later, 60 dominant firs, 30 from the thinned portion and 30 from the not thinned (control) have been felled and their radial increment has been measured every 1 m along the stem. Abies balsamea rapidly and positively reacts to commercial thinning. Thinning doubles, or nearly doubles, radial CAI at 1,3 m, basal area CAI at 1,3 m and volume CAI. In some cases, this effect is still apparent even 13 year after commercial thinning. Therefore, periodic annual increment of the 13 years after thinning is, for most of the stems, superior than periodic annual increment of the 10 years before thinning. Radial increment gains are more important at the base of the stem than at the top, this causing, after thinning, the natural reduction in stem taper, as it ages, to stop

Trois peuplements équiennes d'Abies balsamea ayant reçu des éclaircies précommerciales ont été éclaircies par le haut sur la moitié des leur superficie. Treize années plus tard, 60 sapins dominants, 30 dans les trois portions éclaircies et 30 dans les non-éclaircies (témoins) ont été abattus et leur accroissement radial mesuré à chaque intervalle de 1 m. L'Abies balsamea réagit très rapidement et positivement à l’éclaircie commerciale. L’éclaircie fait doubler, ou presque, l’AAC radial à 1,3 m, l’AAC en surface terrière à 1,3 m et l’AAC en volume. Dans certains cas, cet effet se fait sentir jusqu’à 13 ans après l’éclaircie, ce qui fait que l’accroissement annuel périodique des 13 années après l’éclaircie soit, dans plusieurs cas, supérieur à celui des 10 années avant l’éclaircie. Les gains en accroissement radial sont plus importants dans la base de la tige qu’en haut, ce qui cause, suite à l'éclaircie, l’arrêt de la diminution naturelle du défilement de la tige avec le vieillissement de celle-ci.
