Identifying sites with the highest recreation potential

Abstract
The study area was analysed to find the best sites to develop three forest recreation activities: hiking, off-piste skiing and holiday resorts. The area was divided into a grid of 200 m x 200 m cells. After selecting elements of interest for hikers, these were connected between them to form many possible trail networks. The best ones were retained according to accessibility and to the diversity of elements of interest into the network. Sites for off-piste skiing were selected in function of slope, difference in height, forest stand density and road access. Finally, these two potentials and 13 other already available cartographic criteria important for holiday resorts were weighted and overlapped to calculate the potential for the whole study area.
Résumé
L'aire d'étude a été analysée pour trouver les meilleurs sites où développer trois activités récréatives en forêt: la longue randonnée, le ski hors-piste et la villégiature commerciale. L'aire d'étude a été divisée en cellules de 200 m x 200 m. Après avoir sélectionné les éléments intéressant pour les randonneurs, ceux-ci ont été connectés entre eux pour former des réseaux de possibles sentiers. Les meilleurs ont été retenus en base à l'accessibilité et à la diversité des éléments d'intérêt. Les sites pour le ski hors-piste ont été sélectionnés en fonction de la pente, le dénivelé, la densité des peuplements forestiers et l'accès routier. Finalement, ces deux potentiels et 13 autres critères cartographiques importants pour la villégiature commerciale déjà disponibles ont été pondérés et superposés pour calculer le potentiel de toute l'aire d'étude.

Innovation
Since this project, potential locations for recreation in the area had only been evaluated by experts on the basis of their personal knowledge. In this study we used available cartographic data do objectively asses this potential.

Avant ce projet, le potentiel des sites récréatifs dans l'aire d'étude n'avaient été évalués que par des experts selon leurs connaissances personnelles. Dans cette étude nous avons utilisé des données cartographiques disponibles pour évaluer ce potentiel objectivement.
